History of Ginger Oil (Spice oil):

The history of ginger goes back over 5000 years when the Indians and ancient Chinese considered it a tonic root for all ailments. When ginger Originated in southeast Asia, it has a long history of being cultivated in other countries. At an early date it was exported to ancient Romans from India. It was used extensively by the Romans, but almost disappeared from the pantry when the Roman Empire fell. After the end of Roman Empire, the Arabs took control of the Spice trade from east. Ginger became quite costly like many other spices. In medieval times it was commonly imported in a preserved form and used to make sweets.

In the 15th century, Ginger plants were carried on ships which is probably how they were introduced to the Carribean as well as Africa. Today ginger is grown throughout the tropics.

Ginger oil is pressed from the root of ginger . ginger oil can vary in colour pale yellow to a darker amber color, and the viscosity also ranges from the medium to watery. It has a strong spicy sharp, and warm aromatic odour. Ginger oil is widely used as a flavor for cake, cookies and biscuits. Besides , as is well suited to help ease colds and flu , Ginger oil is also used for pharma.

Distillation & Properties of Ginger oil:

Steam Distillation is safer because there is no solvent used but pure water as the main component. Ginger oil can be produced from the fresh or dried rhizomes. Oil from the dried rhizomes will contain fewer of the low boiling point volatile compounds ( the compounds that give ginger its flavour and aroma) as these will have evaporated during the drying process. The best ginger oil is obtained from whole rhizomes that are unpeeled. The dried rhizomes are ground to a coarse powder and loaded into a still. Steam is passed through a powder which extracts the volatile oil Components. The steam is condensed with cold water. Uses of Ginger oil;

Nausea and vomiting:  Ginger root and its oil are effective against nausea, motion sickness and vomiting. Usage of ginger may result in reduction in pregnancy related vomiting in women.

Respiratory : It is effective in various respiratory problems such as cold, cough, flu, asthma, bronchitis, breathlessness and also good expectorant. Ginger is very effective in removing mucus from the throats and lungs and hence it generally added with tea and honey for treatment of respiratory problems.

Inflammation & pain: In traditional medicine, ginger extract is often used to treat and reduce inflammation. It is analgesic in nature and reduces pain caused by muscles aches, arthritis, rheumatisms, headache, migraine etc. ginger oil is often massaged on aching muscles to remove muscle strain. It is further believed that regular use of ginger leads to reduction of prostaglandins which are the compounds associated with pain.

Menstrual Problems:. Irregular and painful menstrual discharge can be treated with ginger.

Precautions to use over Ginger oil:

Ginger oil is likely safe to use during pregnancy when taken in the amounts normally found in blood. Garlic oil is possibly unsafe when used in medicinal amounts during pregnancy and breast feeding. There is not safety  of applying ginger oil to the skin if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Pregnant or breast feeding stay on the safe side to avoid use.

 

Ginger oil especially might increase of the risk of bleeding if bleeding disorders.
