History & Description of Patchouli :

Patchouli has a long history in southern Asia and the Far East as incense, body and garment perfume, and insect and leech repellent. Ink in India was once perfumed with patchouli. After his North African campaign (1798-1799) Napoleon Bonaparte brought cashmere shawls were back to Paris were scented with patchouli to protect them from moths. Prior to the import of patchouli oil to france around 1826. Patchouli ( Pogostemon cabin) is a perennial herb native to Southeast Asia, growing wild in Sumatra and java at elevations between 3000 and 6000 feet- through its cultivation is more pervasive in lower tropical jungles. This bushy plant grows to the height of 3 feet, having a strong stem and soft, hairy leaves. For essential oil production, the plant is cut two or three times per year, with the best quality oil derived from leaves harvested in the wet season. The leaves are hand picked , bundled or baled and allowed to partially dry in the shade and ferment for a few days before the oil is extracted via steam distillation. The fermentation process softens the plant cell walls easing the Extraction of the oil.

Distillation of Patchouli Oil:

The young patchouli leaves are steam distilled from the Pogosteman cablin species. The top 3 to 4 pairs of patchouli plant leaves are said to yield essential oils with the strongest aroma. Patchouli Essential oil is usually thick and ranges in color from light yellow to deep amber or brown. This is one of the factors that contribute to the oil improvement with increasing age. Its scent is comparable to wet soil, with a musky, earthy, and slightly sweet fragrance than can be described as smooth and rich. There is a  belief that steam distilling patchouli leaves when they are still fresh and close to their harvesting area, rather then when they are dried, with yield the freshest, highest quality of the oil.

Uses of Patchouli Essential oil;

Aromatherapy:  Patchouli oil is traditionally used to reduce tension, anxiety and insomnia. Its aroma is thought to function as an aphrodisiac and improve concentration. The oil is also used in incense sticks to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Antiseptic: Patchouli Essential oil prevents the infections of the wounds and ulcers. The antiseptic properties of patchouli essential oil prohibit infections such as tetanus as well.

Antidepressant: Patchouli Essential oil helps to get over from the felling of sadness. It boosts the mood and relaxed tension. It stimulates to release the pleasure hormones such as feeling of anger, anxiety, sadness, serotonin.

Anti-Cancer: Patchouli alcohol is a compound which is possessed by patchouli oil, helps to boost the cell death cycle in colorectal cancer cells.

Natural Deodrant: The musky, sweet and spicy aroma of the patchouli oil helps to mask the odor of the body by destroying germs. Its also counteract with fungus, 1-2 drops should be rubbed to the armpits or use it by adding it to the body lotion.

Stimulates Hormones: Patchouli Essential oil can treat impotency and erectile dysfunction. It also stimulates the hormones and enhances the libido. Patchouli essential oil enhances the estrogen and testosterone levels.

Precautions to use over Patchouli Essential oil:

Preganancy and breast feeding when patchouli oil taken by mouth in amount commonly found in blood. There is not enough reliable information about safety of taking patchouli oil  in medicinal bases if you are pregnant  or breast feeding stay on safe side to avoid use.
